Europe. Greece inaugurates Daedalus supercomputer to support AI research

Greece inaugurated its most powerful supercomputer on Monday, a €58.9 million ($68.3 million) project designed to support artificial intelligence (AI) development and scientific research.

Installed at the Lavrion Technological and Cultural Park southeast of Athens, Daedalus ranks 31st worldwide in the TOP500 list of the world’s most powerful computing systems, with measured performance of 85.69 petaflops. It ranks 23rd in the Green500 list of energy-efficient supercomputers.

Speaking at the inauguration, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said Greece needed to develop its own AI infrastructure to avoid depending on access to computing resources controlled by others.

“If we do not invest ourselves in AI infrastructure, we will be exposed to the possibility of someone cutting off our access to computing power,” he said.

Mitsotakis also cited progress in digital government services since 2019, saying the next step was to build infrastructure capable of supporting AI applications. Daedalus will provide computing resources to researchers and small and medium-sized businesses seeking to develop such applications, he said.
