Background

Since October 7, 2023, Al Jazeera has been covering the conflict through its journalists on the ground, who are risking their lives to do so. This war, which has been going on for two years, has had a profound effect on the channel’s teams.

Objective of the Al Jazeera series

This three-part series traces Al Jazeera’s journalistic coverage while highlighting the human and emotional cost paid by its reporters. At least ten of the channel’s journalists have been killed since the start of the conflict.

Part 1: The first weeks of the war

The series opens with Wael al-Dahdouh, head of the Gaza bureau, facing relentless bombing. Alongside his journalistic work, he suffers a major personal tragedy with the death of his wife, children, and grandson.

Part 2: The move south

The second episode follows Al Jazeera’s Arabic- and English-speaking correspondents, forced to work from makeshift camps. This phase is marked by further tragedy: the death of Hamza, Wael al-Dahdouh’s son, and that of cameraman Samer Abudaqa.

Part 3: The final months of the conflict

The last part covers the following months of the war, during which other journalists are killed, notably Ismail al-Ghoul and Anas al-Sharif, further highlighting the heavy toll paid by the profession.
