German media: Thessaloniki metro among ‘world’s most beautiful’

NEW Germany’s public broadcaster ZDF has hailed Thessaloniki’s newly inaugurated metro as “one of the most beautiful in the world.”

“Many stations are impressive and situated within archaeological sites,” ZDF reported. The report highlights the constant discovery of archaeological artifacts in the tunnels, which delayed its completion. “Spanning 3,500 square meters, the station resembles a museum more than a transit stop, preserving a crossroads of the ancient Decumanus Maximus road from late antiquity, complete with gates, shops, workshops, columns, and other relics.”

German editorial network RND called the metro an “expensive Christmas gift” and a project “long awaited by Thessaloniki’s citizens.” Despite its delays, RND noted, “The wait was worth it. Thessaloniki’s new metro is considered the most modern and beautiful in Europe.” The report also highlights the project’s skyrocketing cost due to delays, rising from an initial estimate of €500 million to nearly €3 billion.
