Two Hidden Valley residents were arrested Friday on suspicion of possessing controlled substances after law enforcement were tipped off to a package of synthetic drugs destined for a Minnesota City residence.

Winona County Sheriff’s Department investigators were notified on Wednesday by the United States Postal Service of a suspicious parcel that had arrived from China and was addressed to a Hidden Valley residence, according to the department.

The department, working with the Department of Homeland Security, opened the package after obtaining a search warrant and discovered 6 grams of a brown crystalline substance, later tested and identified as Alpha-PVP, more commonly known as bath salts, according to the department.

A fake name was used on the package, though investigators soon targeted two suspects, Roy Terral Gore III, 28, and Melonie Lee Starks, 22, both of Hidden Valley, who had received other packages from China in the last month, according to the department.

After obtaining the sample for testing, investigators then resealed the package for delivery.

On Friday, investigators met with the postal service and the package was delivered. Gore signed for the package, according to the department. When investigators responded with a search warrant, Gore and Starks were present in the residence, and investigators found the package opened and under a couch in a bedroom, according to the department.

More of the substance was found in the tank of the toilet in a burned piece of foil, as well as in a Newport cigarette box, the department said. Paraphernalia to ingest controlled substances was also found, as well as a small amount of marijuana.

Gore and Starks have had charges referred of fifth-degree controlled substance possession and fifth-degree controlled substance sales; they remain in the Winona County Jail, awaiting a first court appearance Monday, the department said.
